The Word Made Queer

View Original

It's not you, It's me.

It's not you,
It's me.
You see,
I don't fit
the categories
allotted to me.
I'm passable,
which makes it
almost impossible
to be known,
as my whole self.
In a world where "bi"
Is becoming more known.
No need to come out?
A multi-way attraction
is the acknowledgement
that we have been socialized,
traumatized,
and it has been dramatized.
It being bodies.
Black, white,
Short, tall,
Smart, dumb,
all binaries
that don't fit everyone.
Isn't it ironic then
That bi is almost there.
A bi-nary in itself
signifying two,
equally halved.
But they aren't the same.

One is against the grain.
And neither fit anyway.
So that label doesn’t work,
which means I don’t fit
even in queer categories.
But I don’t want to get stuck
in one of those laboratories.
Where people ask questions,
so they can put me
back in a box.
And that’s not what I want,
cuz who I am rocks.
And what’s more,
adding a new letter to the acronym
doesn’t make people understand
who you are,
or even what you like. The letters LGBTQIA
Do not have the same weight.
Stigma running high,
when people can’t be defined.

People saying who I am
is a sin.
Churches
wanting your membership,
but not my hardship.
Because I are real,
fully who I am,
in a way that isn’t
defined by the world.
In fact it’s non-conforming,
and hopefully
not performing.
So let me be me,
in all my complexity.
Because you see,
I am not two halves of a whole,
I am just me.
